
The longer I work in the coaching field, and it's been more than twenty years so far, the more I am affirmed of this overarching truth--IT IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD. In today's world, we call that mindset. What you are thinking determines how you are feeling, which leads into what you are doing. Or, sometimes what you are thinking and feeling keep looping, and you do nothing. Make no mistake, it all starts in your mind, with your mind.
When one of my daughters was suffering with a plethora of unhelpful thoughts (aka depression-worry over the past and anxiety-worry over the future) the pediatrician said to her--you can choose your thoughts. This was about ten years ago, pre-covid. Life coaching in the pediatrician's office!
The first time I heard "you can choose your thoughts" was many years before that, and I actually dismissed it. REALLY? HOW? MY THOUGHTS JUMP IN MY HEAD OUT OF NO WHERE--HOW CAN I CHOOSE THEM? Right then and there, I was "choosing" a thought--one of NO WAY, or as we say today--scarcity mindset. It won't work out. These thoughts have control over me. I can't help how they jump in. (WRONG!)
In my experience, these are the five biggest blocks that get in the way of an "abundance" mindset where life will work out. Things will go right even if you don't know the HOW of it happening.
#1 Most of the thoughts you have today, you had yesterday.
#2 You cannot believe everything you think.
#3 You have to slow down to check in with you thoughts, as in quiet the distractions, turn off devices and sit still with a big, deep breath.
#4 Even if it your thought is true, if it is an unhelpful thought, dismissing it and refocusing makes more sense.
#5 You have to keep working on mindset forevaaaaaaah.
I am writing about this today because I have spent six months trying to get a prescription at the online pharmacy, on a three month refill to happen, the way it has for the past five years. I cannot tell you how many hours, yes, hours I have spent with three pharmacies, the doctor's office and my insurance company. If you were at my house yesterday while this $h*!+ show was going on, you wouldn't have recognized me. It took randomly getting a photo of my 8 day old new granddaughter, Liana Jane, popping up on my phone to shift my mindset from scarcity to abundance. I am not proud, and I am not choosing that again. I scared my dog, Pippa, when she saw me so angry and frustrated.
Technology is great when it works, and it is a disaster when it doesn't, and customer service has left the building as far as I can tell... SO, even though all of that frustration, incompetence and lack of follow through feels very true to me--focusing on it is not helpful, and choosing to shift to "things will work out" even if I don't know how is so much more worthwhile.
Sometimes I like to flip my thoughts inside out. What if the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I am thinking is what can happen? WHAT IF? This takes a lot of trust and faith and hope in the universe to provide. AND, by placing your energy in that abundant place instead of the scarce place makes all the difference. Earth angels, I am calling you out.
Yes, even for coaches like me, who work on this all the time, we have to do our own work too. We have to shift those thoughts all the time because we all have over 50,000 thoughts a day, and not all of them are worth holding on to. And the worst ones, we do not want to see on replay tomorrow and the next day and the next. HARD STOP.

PS I am off to eastern France and Western Germany with two of the six grandchildren, Bjorn 2 1/2 and Madeline 9 months and their parents, Lou and another grandmother. This is my first two week vacation of my life--I am embracing it all. Talk to you when I return in Mid June. :))
